Running.

I'm sure a few of the students were not huge supporters of the laps they did today, but as I say on multiple occasions, their consequences to every action. On the positive side, you never regret a run, so it's only doing the body good!

Jk/sk's worked more on their beanbag toss today, I'm amazed what a little practice can do.

Grade 1/2 continue to work on their hand eye coordination, These are skills they'll use for the rest of their lives!!!

Chilly Thursday

Hop everyone is staying warm on the first cold day of the season.

Today with the jk and sk's we played a highly successful game of beanbag horseshoes. The game is very similar to real horseshoes but we used a cone and beanbags. It ties in nicely with our fundamental movements unit because students had to control the distance of their throw.

Intramurals continued today, grade 7-9 kappa had a sizeable victory in floor hockey.

October 22!

Our burpee challenge is still In full effect but instead of having the entire class atempt 20+ burpees, I have decided to pick random students in the class to perform them. Those who are not picked have been cheering on their fellow classmates who have to take on the task of 20+ burpees.

Grade 2-4 have started their hand-eye coordination unit, these are skills that transfer over to every we will play.

Floor hockey intramurals are in full swing, today the grade 3/4 zetas defeated kappa in a well spirited game. Please keep checking the schedule for upcoming games.

Oct 17

A great day to do 17 burpees!

Grade 2s today had the kicking assessment, I was testing to see if they were able to kick a moving ball using the technique we had been working on. Planting the opposite foot, using the inside of foot and keeping their weight over the ball.

Grade 3 and 4's played a great throwing game called 21 pictured below. It was a good activity to use the throwing techniques we have been working on.

Cross country meet

Yesterday St. Jude's competed at the SSAF cross country championships at Sunnybrook Park in Toronto.  1300 students were representing various schools from all over the GTA. A huge thanks to Crestwood for organizing such a massive event.

congratulations to all the St. Jude's athletes who competed, you represented the school very well.

Indoor soccer finals

Today the indoor soccer intramurals came to an end with a battle between zeta and kappa. A combination of great goaltending and timely goal scoring gave zeta the victory.

Grades 7 to 9 continued with their European handball unit, I amazed how well everyone enjoys the sport and I wouldn't be surprised if at the next Olympics it gets more exposure.

Grade 2-4's continue to work on their fundamental movements including throwing and kicking.

Jk and sk's have been playing cooperative games, we are trying to work on playing fairly as a group!

Have a great weekend

Tuesday

Today In the wild adventures of St. Jude's PE:

Cooperative games were the foucs of many classes today, learning to work with other is a great lifetime skill we all need to work on.

Grade 2-4 worked on the proper throwing technique, too often I see older students throwing the ball not using their body. Teaching points were: using our legs, body and momentum for power. Keeping your eye on the target and holding the ball In your fingers as opposed to the palm for ease of release.

MYP started their European handball unit, this fast paced, high scoring game is one of my favourites.

Grade 7-9's are still running the student lead warm up excerises before our basketball unit.

Our burpee challenge is still in full swing, I reminded the students doing the challenge is a lot like life, you get out what you put into it. If the students properly do the burpees they will see and feel results.

Sunside

Good afternoon,

Fantastic weather once again today, we need a retractable roof on the gym!

I introduced the jk/sk's to the proper overhand throwing technique today. We worked on throwing using our bodies rather than just our arms for more power.

5-9 is transitioning to playing a proper game of basketball, we are starting to work on offensive strategies.

Grade 5-9 started the basketball unit, It was a fairly light class which allowed me to see what areas of the game I will need to focus on going forward.

Reminder the intramurals schedule is on the tv in front of the gym.

Have a great night.

I was extremely happy to see the enthusiasm of all of the students today, I can tell is going to be a great year!

I went over the rules and expectations with all the classes today. Tomorrow we will jump right into the swing of things.

I asked a few of the classes why they thought PE is important to have at school. I wanted to give "Gym class" some relevance for their lives. Once I ask all the grades I will post their thoughts!

Monday, January 28, 2013

Grade 1/2 we attempted working on cooperative games with some success. Today's activity was the human knot! Students were to stand in a circle, they couldn't hold hands with the person next to them or the same person twice, the object was to communicate with each other to untangle the knot!

Good Evening

The grade 3-8's experienced their first of many crossfit workouts today. Crossfit is described as the Sport of fitness, you may have see the commercials on tv. Obviously I kept it fairly simple but heart rates were up for the entire class, I was proud of the work that was put in.

Grade 3/4 worked on volleying the ball to a partner today. Grade 5-8 worked on position and keeping their feet moving on the court. I was very impressed with the improvements I saw by the end of today's class. Students need to be reminded that volleyball is not a stationary sport and a lot of movement is needed to be successful.

REMINDER for grade 5-8's to bring in their curling form signed in order to go tomorrow.

thanks!

Theta victory!

Theta beat zeta today in grade 5-8 intramurals!

Standings are
Theta - 4
Kappa - 2

Up and a way

Good evening

Jk/sk's continued to work on their hand eye coordination by playing catch with a tennis ball today. This posed a challenge to some of the students because the ball is much smaller that what we've been using.
